American Suburb { windoze
}
{ 1992 } Installation — made of found windows, recliner
chair, lampshades, newspaper and lighting
American Suburb was part of the installation
and performance piece American Dream 4. The suspended assembly
of windows in space, surrounding and leading to the broken
armchair were to suggest a typical nighttime drive through
any nearby area suburb. As the viewer, from the front of
the installation, the viewer fills in as one of 2 missing
elements
— the television set. From the back, the viewer can
imagine his or herself as the American television watcher,
in the grand command seat. From either side, the viewer
gets a neo-Futuristic glimpse of houses going by during
a casual drive through town.
The 'missing elements' definitely
suggest the emptiness of television watching activities,
activities that oftentime fill 4 to 6 hours of the average
American's time per night. Time that often goes 'missing'.
